A major privacy issue has surfaced with Anthropic’s Claude AI. Shared conversations created through the platform’s share feature have been indexed by Google and other search engines. This means chats that users thought were only accessible via a private link can now be found by anyone searching the web.
The problem was widely discussed after posts on X and Reddit pointed out that searching for site:claude.ai/share returned numerous public conversations.
Some of these chats contained sensitive information, including API keys, crypto wallet details, personal resumes with real names and contact information, internal company project notes, and private personal discussions.
How the Share Feature Became Public
When a user clicks the share button in Claude, the system generates a public web page with a unique link. The intention is that only people who receive the link can view the conversation.
However, these pages lacked a proper noindex tag. Without this tag, search engines were free to crawl and list the pages once the links appeared elsewhere online.
This is similar to an earlier issue that affected ChatGPT about a year ago. In that case, OpenAI quickly added protections. Anthropic had previously stated that it blocks some crawlers and does not submit sitemaps of shared chats, but the absence of a strong noindex directive still allowed indexing when links spread across social media or forums.
Users have found examples of genuinely private content that was never meant for public view. This has led to widespread concern among people who regularly share Claude conversations for collaboration or feedback.
What Users Should Do Right Now
If you have ever used the share feature on Claude, you should check your shared chats immediately. Go to Settings > Privacy > Shared Chats (or “Your data”) and review every link you have created. Delete any conversations that contain personal, financial, or confidential information.
Anthropic appears to be working with search engines to remove indexed results, and many links have already started disappearing from Google. However, cached versions or results on other search engines may still exist for some time.
The incident highlights a broader issue with AI chat platforms. “Share with anyone who has the link” does not always mean the content stays hidden from search engines.
Until platforms consistently apply noindex tags, authentication requirements, or expiring links, users should treat shared AI conversations with the same caution as public web pages.
For now, the safest approach is simple: avoid sharing sensitive information through public Claude links, and regularly clean up any existing shared chats.
