Millions of Indians are getting free access to premium AI tools as global tech leaders race to capture one of the world’s fastest-growing digital markets. Starting this week, OpenAI’s ChatGPT “Go” chatbot, Google’s AI suite, and Perplexity AI’s assistant are being offered at no cost for up to a year through partnerships with major Indian telecom companies.
Premium AI Tools: Expanding AI Access in India

Google has joined hands with Reliance Jio, while Perplexity AI has partnered with Airtel to include their AI tools in mobile data packs. These offers give Indian users free or discounted access, encouraging widespread adoption of generative AI.
Key details:
- OpenAI: Launching ChatGPT “Go” for Indian users at no cost for one year
- Google: Offering AI-powered tools bundled with Jio’s data plans
- Perplexity AI: Partnering with Airtel to give free access to its AI assistant
Experts say this strategy is more than generosity. It’s a long-term bet to make AI part of everyday life in India. With over 900 million internet users, most under 24, India offers both scale and diversity—ideal for training and improving AI systems.
“Tech companies want Indians to use their platforms early,” said Tarun Pathak from Counterpoint Research. “Once users get comfortable, they’re more likely to pay later.”
However, the rapid spread of premium AI tools raises privacy concerns. India’s new Digital Personal Data Protection Act (DPDP) 2023 aims to strengthen digital privacy but has yet to be fully implemented.

Experts believe India’s flexible digital environment makes it a perfect testing ground for global AI tools, unlike regions with stricter rules like the EU or South Korea.
For now, India’s young, tech-savvy users stand to benefit most—enjoying free access to cutting-edge AI while helping shape how the world’s next generation of smart tools evolve.
