WhatsApp ChatGPT support is coming to an end, and millions of users will soon lose access to the popular AI assistant inside the messaging app. OpenAI has confirmed that ChatGPT will stop working on WhatsApp from 15 January 2026 after Meta brought in new rules for the WhatsApp Business API. Users who depend on ChatGPT for homework help, quick replies or daily planning now need to act fast if they want to keep their chat history safe.

Why WhatsApp ChatGPT support is ending?

WhatsApp ChatGPT support is ending in January

Under Meta’s updated policy, only business and customer service bots can use the WhatsApp Business API. General-purpose AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini no longer meet the criteria. Meta says the change will help protect WhatsApp from large-scale automated traffic and keep its systems stable. Analysts also say the move helps Meta push its own Meta AI on WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger.

OpenAI says it agrees with the new rules and is focused on making the transition easy. The company has promised that every user will get a way to move their conversations from WhatsApp ChatGPT support to the official ChatGPT app and website.

From 15 January 2026, ChatGPT will stop sending and receiving messages on WhatsApp. Anyone who tries to text the bot will receive an automatic reply explaining that support has ended.

ChatGPT will still be available on:

  • Official ChatGPT app for iOS and Android
  • ChatGPT website
  • Voice and desktop integrations

To keep their WhatsApp chat history, users can link their phone number with the ChatGPT app. Once they do this, OpenAI will sync older conversations to secure cloud storage.
